The number of global non-cash transactions is forecast to reach the trillions by 2029, cementing these types of transactions as the money of the future. The change has been a long time coming, and Swissquote’s Digital Payments theme is ready to capitalise. Fiat money has always had disadvantages, from the threat of counterfeiting to manufacturing costs, and a questionable hygiene factor: paper money is a known carrier of pathogens and bacteria. The current payment system is under increasing pressure from the cleaner, easier, more convenient digital currency and non-cash payment systems. It is inevitable that these will win out in the end. ATMs are used less and less as people move to cashless transactions and are expected to be ‘extinct’ by 2037. In mature financial markets, debit cards and other platforms including Apple Pay and PayPal have become the norm, and the younger, tech-savvy generations are embracing this brave new world.
