Gold and precious metals

The precious metals you purchase with your Swissquote account are unallocated. This means you own an undivided, fractional interest in the physical metals owned by Swissquote.

Your positions are backed by physical gold and silver, held in vaults in Switzerland. However, your positions do not give you a right to the physical metal itself.

No. Swissquote only facilitates buying and selling. Physical delivery is not possible, and because the Bank is your sole counterparty, precious metals cannot be transferred in or out of your account.

Custody fees cover storage and insurance, and are charged as follows:

• Gold (XAU): 0.20% per year (0.10% for VIPs)
• Silver (XAG): 0.40% per year (0.20% for VIPs)**

To buy fractions of gold ounces or silver at spot price, you need to add XAU and/or XAG as a new currency in your multi-currency account. On the web platform:

1. Go to “My account” (profile icon) > “Profile and settings”
2. Select “Trading preferences”
3. Click “Currencies”
4. Click “Add currency”
5. Select “XAU” or “XAG”

You’ll then see XAU (gold) or XAG (silver) alongside your other currencies under “Assets” on the web platform and under “Cash” in the mobile app. From there, simply click “Buy.”
